I tried with the latest mainline kernel and this works fine.

pti at pti-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux pti-laptop 2.6.32-02063217-generic #02063217 SMP Tue Aug 3 09:10:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

AFAICT the symptoms only happen when using 2.6.32-24
