Thanks for the note.

I had to re-install 10.04 yesterday after the laptop was repaired.  (IBM
wiped the HDD.  I had everything backed up but still wished they wouldn't
have done that.)

Anyway, after a fresh install, changing from ext3 to ext4, then installing
 247 updates, the error message went away and boot time is significantly
decreased.

I will save your message in case Ubuntu suffers a regression again in the
future.
