I'm affected by the very same behavior on Lucid (2.6.32-24-generic
#39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux). In most
cases, when plugging in an USB massstorage device, the system simply
hangs (no log messages, no error, simply dead), occasionally the system
does not hang with different symptoms (one or some of):

- dmesg says the device is not ready
- no auto mounting by Gnome
- auto mounting but loosing the device after some seconds
- mount/unmounting of the device in short time spans (30 seconds)

Interestingly, the device is mounted fine and somewhat stable, although
the system sometimes still hangs after some time.
