By the bye, it seems as though the OS never loaded the Synaptics drivers
at all. No indication that they're present.

root at tiger:/home/ckr# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i synaptics
root at tiger:/home/ckr# 

As can be seen.

On the GUI, there is no "touchpad tab" available. No touchpad utilities
will start or load because the drivers are not present. HAL, or its
replacement, simply does not "see" a touchpad.
