My twopennies.
I'm running 10.04 server w. the following kernel:
2.6.32-21-generic-pae #32-Ubuntu SMP
The machine is an old Thosiba laptop w: 250 Mb and a Pentium III processor  (~600 Mhz).
It has worked flawlessly w-out the recommended fixes as a printerserver for some months.
