Big oops on my part - I was in fact using the wrong kernel.  I can 
confirm that the kernel at 
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~manjo/lucid/lp561802/ works for me. I no 
longer get hangs on boot when an external display is connected through 
the vga port.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with the DP2VGA adapter I just 
ordered.  ;-S
