Tested this again with current Ubuntu 10.04 - kernel:
Linux gecko2 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:22:14 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

The SiPix camera no longer causes an ooops when it is plugged in.

This ticket may be closed as far as I am concerned.
