I installed 10.04 (i386) final today (clean install) and had the same
problem on my X31. After trying a bit I found the following:

- disabled KMS + disabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor --> suspend and hibernate both work
- disabled KMS + enabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor --> complete garbled screen (no further testing)
- disabled KMS + disabled compiz + enabled metacity-compositor --> suspend and hibernate both work

So... wild guess: its a problem with enabled KMS and compiz.
