As of the current kernel 2.6.31-20-generic the boot is continuous on
normal start up.

On restore from hibernate the HD activity is very little with the light
flickering every 10s.

Boot time to complete log in is approximately 1m 20s from cold start.
Boot time to the locked screen log in is approximately 10m 35s when restoring from hibernate.

Added the following lines to /boot/grub/menu.lst to get hibernate to
work at all

resume=/dev/sda6

where /dev/sda6 is the swap partition.
