I've got simmilar problem on Lucid with pata_acpi/pata_via.
Pata gets initatied and found connected devices but incorrectly limited to 40-wire cable (I've got 80-wire cable, too, which worked without problems from Breeze/Dapper to Karmic).
Next ata interface losts interrupt, timeout and few soft resets.
In consequence I can't use my IDE DVD writers.
