** Description changed:

I believe this is a bit of a meta bug, and I apologize for that aspect.
However, I want to collect the issues and resolutions I've found that
make the HP NC6400 laptop bearable with Lucid. I had the same issues
with Karmic, but didn't pursue them too seriously.

First issue is that the hard drive has the following issue:

  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14543

The workaround is automatically running at boot the following script:

  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=25357

-
Since I fixed that, I noticed another problem that I cannot identify that is triggered by plugging / unplugging the laptop's AC Power. As a result, I have disabled the following files by commenting out the following contents of /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/
  powersave-policy-hda-powerdown
  powersave-policy-dirty-writeback
  anacron
  powersave-policy-sata-link-power

-
- I had remarked when monitoring the syslog from other computers that these were executed consistently before crashes. It's not every time they execute (or that AC is plugged / unplugged) that there is a crash.. But they are always there before a crash.

+ 3. Related to the ATI video card, some hangs appear related to KMS.
+ Disabling KMS with these instructions works:

+
+ In brief: echo options radeon modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-
+ kms.conf
