I can confirm that I can reproduce this at will.  The problem is with a
battery that used to be reported as "low capacity, possibly broken".  If
the battery is in the laptop, Ubuntu will not boot.  If the battery is
removed, and Ubuntu booted, then the battery is installed, the crash
reported occurs.  If the battery is in the system, Ubuntu will not shut
down properly.  I'm going to tag this as ACPI-related.
