Hi Heather,
I know how you feel, the good news is that it looks like whatever issue it is will be fixed in later versions/updates of Ubuntu since all my fix does it move the kernel (the heart of any Linux system) onto a later version (still under development). So you can if you want you can just use earphones and wait (it might be a long wait - probably after the roll out of Ubuntu 10.4).

However if you feel like being brave try to follow my instructions in
post 81, please note that moving the kernel on like this can introduce
new quirks which you may like even less than having no sound.

But don't let that put you off because thanks to the way Linux works you
can  select exactly which kernel you want to use by holding down the
shift key when the computer starts.
