OK, apparently all I have to do is file a bug and it starts working
again.

Actually, I rebooted and tried the extra options: acpi=off, noapic and
nodma (also took out "splash" and "quiet") and it booted up just fine.
I just about jumped out of my seat when the startup sound played, as I
was expecting it to hang again.
