Public bug reported:

Touchpad and buttons do not function (nothing happens when sliding finger along pad or pushing mousepad buttons)
sudo tpconfig -i:
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).

Tried running gsynaptics but comes up with the following message:
GSynaptics couldn't intialize.
You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics
As xorg.conf is no longer used (did not exist after clean installation) I tried the suggestion from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad#shmconfig without success.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
