I propose this is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/linux/+bug/292256 as well as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/459678
Which has been fixed with a recent kernel update (2.6.31-20.57), at least in my case.
