David and All,

The alsamixer and bios were set correctly. I followed every relevant
step in the "Debugging Sound Problems" link.

When I ran the operating system from the live cd,everything worked fine.

Realizing everybody working on this,many of whom are volunteers,are
working against a deadline to  have LL ready to release,I simply re
installed KK----and all is well.

If it happens again,or something similar,I'll do as you describe,(no,the
test did not work,yes,file a bug report),hoping the information will be
useful to someone,at some point.

But for now,thanks one and all.:-)
