I get the same behaviour than Chris in #188 but installing linux-
image-2.6.31-10-generic_2.6.31-10.30~lp389040oga1_i386.deb in Karmic.

1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: OK
