I have similar equipment to Mike C and the same bug.
Sony Vaio SZ240P
Linux jordan-vaio 2.6.28-16-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 20 19:48:24 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.04, and have only seen this bug with
9.04. Oddly I did not see it for a while after installing 9.04, but
rather it only starting in the last month or so. Too bad I didn't keep
track of which kernel.
