Karmic uses grub2 and ESC will no longer work to get to the boot menu.

Step 1 should read:

1. Press and hold the right SHIFT key as soon as you see your BIOS
screen and release when you see the Grub2 boot menu.

3. Select the "kernel" line.

4. At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press CTRL-X

5. Your machine will boot with the edited command line.
