I dist-upgraded to 9.10 and faced the same problem with the 9.10 kernel.
( ie. root on lvm could not be found with the new kernel.)

I booted from the oldest kernel that worked for me (2.6.28-11)
And this time when I ran update-initramfs for latest kernel, the new initrd found the root disk.
