This problems was entirely preventable because the fix was known two
weeks before karmic's release.

However, I'm wondering from comments above (post #129) that the
kernel.org version 2.6.31.5 does not work with some modems, if the
problem is wider than Ubuntu and affects other distros as well.

I also wonder if, as Ben Herrenschmidt commented earlier, we have
multiple problems. My e169 works with Andy's patched kernel and
kernel.org kernels after and including 2.6.31.5.
