I tried that but it didn't work for me.  I may not know how to install a
kernel option.  I had previously been adding parameters to the first
menu option.  It seemed odd that you would add something to the
defoptions line and not uncomment it so I tried it both ways.  I added
the parameters to the first menu item as I had been doing.  Nothing made
any difference, with or without sudo update-grub.  It's possible I lost
track and missed the winning configuration.  I could always cause the
problem to occur.

I may try finding a more recent BIOS.  Perhaps it's that simple.  If
loading the new BIOS doesn't crash my system.  ;-)
