I have found similar hang in Hardy when installed on dual-boot mode with XP on Sony Vaio desktop.
Only occurs after first major update. If I re-install from CD it works fine.

I have since discovered same on Acer Aspire 1 with 8.10 after replacing
Linpus. Ubuntu is sole OS this time. Workaround was once again to
reinstall (this time from USB) and NOT update.

If Ubuntu ain't broke I ain't fixing it!
