wpshooter, I'm not an official member of Ubuntu or representing any
Ubuntu-group opinion.
Those three steps will show what changes will be made without the
updates, with the updates and with the two commands you used from that
website. My opinion is that this can greatly help and give the
developers/maintainers at least a clue to where the problem actually is.
As you said, doing those two commands fixed your problem, so something
extra was changed with that command (as sed had the "g" option which
means to repeatedly replace that piece of text), something that the
current command didn't catch.
As a suggestion, you could install Ubuntu on another hard drive (and
disconnect all other hard drives) on the same machine, which wouldn't
change anything on your original hard disk and you don't have to mess up
your settings.
Anyone still facing the problem should attempt to provide the same information:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/283316/comments/107
Every step of the way you should check if your CD/DVD works and does not
retract (loads back in) when you press the eject button.
Try with and without a CD/DVD media in the drive.
