I have encountered problems with AdHoc mode using iwl3945 on Hardy
(fine with the old driver in Gutsy and pkill NetworkManager).  
The issues is discussed and fixed at (although I'm yet able to confirm this myself):

The patch seems to have reached the 2.6.29-rc1 kernel (I think it was reverted a couple of times).
