Tried two more kernels.  Daily mainline has a regression and does not
seem to support my wifi card anymore at all (I became aware of this
after it was suggested to me to install linux-backports-modules-karmic).
The current lucid kernel works the same as Andy's (original problem is
fixed, but lots of warnings about decryptions failing)
