An update on the current status of this bug:

This issue has never affected a released version of Ubuntu, only an
alpha milestone of Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid).

The problem was worked around in kernel version 2.6.27-4.6 in Intrepid
by temporarily disabling the e1000e driver (the e1000 driver is still
provided). There is no risk of hardware damage with the current
Intrepid packages.

A more complete fix is still in progress upstream, though Tim is
preparing an interim fix which will allow the e1000e driver to be
restored (see comment #98).
