[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down

Same bug here: Compaq Presario F700. The problem occurred when I
upgraded to the Ubuntu 8.10 release candidate last week. I then did a
total re-installation today from CD, and it occurred while booting from
CD, and after it's been installed.

I want to note a few additional times this behavior arises:

1. When shutting down. Occasionally I need to hold a key down to shut-down.
2. In terminal mode. I booted to "safe mode" today to install NVidia drivers - I believe Run Level 1? - and the behavior occurred there. While using the NVidia installer, I often had to press a key to get the installer to proceed to the next step.

I don't think this problem has anything to do with booting, per se, but
with either kernel run-level or graphical mode. If I knew how to boot
Ubuntu into a higher run-level that stayed in text mode, I'd try it out
to see which is the likely culprit.

Has this problem only been seen in Mandriva and Ubuntu? Until it is
resolved, I might migrate to Fedora OpenSUSE for a while, as I really
want to use the new kernel (it should be able to support my wireless via
athk5 without manually installing madwifi).
