According to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/246269/comments/71 a fix was released.
1. I am however not sure, if it is fixed for 8.10 final only? RC of Kubuntu Live CD (kubuntu-8.10-rc-desktop-i386.iso) shows still shows the bug. The boot stalls for half a minute, but then continues. On completion of boot I observe no further effects.
2. You can't use any workaround if you use a live cd, and I am not sure whether you want to accept this behavior to remain on every live session you do.
