I reversed all the mods suggested above & uninstalled v86d---my system
now boots with a "quiet splash" as it should. I next tried to boot with
"splash" instead of "quiet splash" to see the text below usplash. Boot-
up with this mode is text-only, not usplash + text below--Shut-
down/reboot works as expected---so there is still a regression
somewhere.
