I have now downloaded the live ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso and
burned it to disc.

It still leaves me with the same problem. The touchpad is impossibly
sensitive to tapping and tapping cannot be disabled

which means I still have to disable it and use my USB wireless mouse.
