I came to the same conclusion. I have released a patched kernel package
and and intrepid desktop cd with patched kernel.

But if you use this please check my page frequently because this kernel doesn't get autoupdates.
This is good because the updates may block the system again but it is bad for security fixes.

On my Averatec all hardware works now. (Intel abg wlan) But i have heard
that are also some problems with ralink wlan cards.
