hmmm ...

user at ubuntu:~$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

The sound worked on a new installation of 8.04 - then crapped out
immediately after Virtualbox ose-modules were installed. Still wrestling
on the restoration of audio but it is definitely the Virtualbox module
that caused the problem.
