I have same problem:
jefferson at jeffersonlaptop:~$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.
jefferson at jeffersonlaptop:~$ uname -a
