I have the same problem and I think the problem is in i915 drm module,
which is located in linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic package.

I think so because when you load i915 modules you get 
DRM: drm_get_dev failed. 
and nothing is in /dev/dri/

Unfortunately there is not much information when drm module is loaded
with debug=1.
