Public bug reported:

I have tried setting vga=789, vga=791 and vga=792.

In Gutsy the result of using these settings for me was this bug -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta/+bug/184822

In Hardy (development version) the result of using these parameters is
that the text appears at boot time (checked by removing "quiet splash"
from boot parameters). GDM successfully starts, but if I try to switch
back to tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, I get a blank screen with a
blinking cursor at the correct position. It "looks" like the text is the
same colour as the background because I'm able to successfully log in
and perform tasks from the terminal although the only thing I can see is
a moving blinking cursor as I type the commands, and the programs give
their outputs (I assume they give their outputs because the cursor moves
just like it should if the text appeared).

** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
