I actually found a live cd of 10.3 just this week and tried that out  - it wouldn't even run. I'm glad it works for you though.
I am using Mandriva 2008 at the moment and that at least shuts it down sometimes.

This is a modern laptop I have here, about 18 months old. It uses acpi
not apm, so I don't think that is the answer.
