I encountered this problem on 2008-02-27 daily-live amd64 and on alpha5 i386.  I have these CD drives, with the same symptoms:
SM-BENQ DVD DD DW1640
SS-SAMSUNG SCR-3232

Adding all_generic_ide to boot parameters worked.  Adding ide=nodma did
not.  I had previously installed from the same alpha 5 CD on a different
machine and it worked.
