I have installed linux-source-2.6.26. Unpacked it and copied over the
config file, doing make oldconfig, then make menuconfig.

Now

Processor type and features ---> High Memory Support (4GB) --->

CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G:
Select this if you have a 32-bit processor and between 1 and 4 gigabytes of physical RAM.

Now taking the dmesg part from above:

[...]
[ 0.000000] Warning only 4GB will be used.
[ 0.000000] Use a HIGHMEM64G enabled kernel.
[ 0.000000] 3200MB HIGHMEM available.
[ 0.000000] 896MB LOWMEM available.
[ 0.000000] found SMP MP-table at [c00ff780] 000ff780
[...]

CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G:
Select this if you have a 32-bit processor and more than 4 gigabytes of physical RAM.

free:
desktop linux-source-2.6.26 # free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3364580 1208856 2155724 0 55208 822528
-/+ buffers/cache: 331120 3033460
Swap: 2097144 0 2097144

So, if you can not confirm this, I do not know, how clearer a bug can be
shown here. This has already been in hardy and continues in intrepid.
Now it is the first alpha and I really hope this will be fixed.
