Small update on the mainline front:  Bjorn Helgaas rediscovered the
issue and came to the same conclusions as I did.  The patch I commented
on in comment #54 is indeed needed, and a slightly modified version has
been accepted to -mm [1], let's hope it'll get into 2.6.26.

Having spent a considerable amount of time trying to get this issue
fixed, I'd also appreciate an explanation as to why this has been
rejected for 8.04.1.
