The BIOS is responsible for setting up the MTRRs that map RAM cachable.  In some cases it is possible to avoid using
overlapping MTRRs but in general it is not.  The only general solution is for X to use the PAT support appearing in linux v2.6.26.  I don't know the timeframe for X moving the more general API.

Very little more can be done with MTTRs because of hardware limitations.
