For completeness: 
I failed to mention that I had the following error message while doing the reload in synaptic:
"Failed to fetch http://ubuntu.cs.utah.edu/ubuntu/dists/hardy/universe/source/Sources.bz2  Hash Sum mismatch
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
But because linux-restricted is in... restricted, it should have anything to do with the above bug.
