I've just developed a very similar bug on my xubuntu machine.
I'm using a Logitech diNovo and a Microsoft IntelliMouse
When I Load into xfce for login then i have no use of the keyboard or
mouse, however the optical mouse is lit and the caps lock works.
If I press Print Screen (i found this out through the usual bashing keys
with rage when you can't log into your computer and have a deadline to
meet) the display flashes and everything works as normal.
If it helps you to recreate the bug, immediately before the bug arrived
I'd used 'sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove' in order to prove that ubuntu
can be booted directly to a shell. I then reset my machine and then used
'sudo update-rc.d -f gdm defaults' to restore xfce. If I were a betting
man then I'd guess this caused the fault.
I'm attaching my dmesg, i'll follow with lsusb.txt
