Actually on my system I typically get kernel panic that can only be
terminated by REISUB. (TTY is not available - I checked.) This occurs
immediately after vbe_init fails.

Very occasionally the boot continues to GDM:

[    1.678748] uvesafb: failed to execute /sbin/v86d
[ 1.678748] uvesafb: make sure that the v86d helper is installed and executable
[ 1.678748] uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-2)
[    1.678748] uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
[ 1.678748] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22
