It seems that for some Dell hardware, snd-hda-intel.ko is modified to
accomodate hsfmodem. This broke sound for me on an Inspiron 1525 for the
Intel soundcard.

If you have the following file "/lib/modules/2.6.24-XX-
generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda/snd-hda-
intel.ko.REPLACEDBYhsfmodem" AND suffer from this problem, go to the

This solved my sound problem on recent kernels.
