BTW the computer is a modified laptop --- Inspiron 9400/e1705 (I
replaced the Intel Core Duo 1.73 with a Core 2 Duo 2.00 so I can run 64
bit, and replaced the ATIx1400 with a Nvidia Quadro Fx3500 graphics
card) the rest is stock (iwl3945 wireless)

** Attachment added: "dmesg"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16525105/dmesg

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules

This was an old problem that was fixed for me around 2.5.24-15 IIRC with
the linux-backports-modules installed. But, back to square 1 as the
wifi led is no longer illuminated with the 2.6.24-20 and 2.6.24-21
  kernels.

The -21 kernel was obtained from the PPA:

  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/timg-tpi/ubuntu hardy main

- Actual versions used:
+ Actual (kernel) versions used:
  2.6.24-20.38
  2.6.24-21.41ubuntu1
