Probably the easiest workaround is to install kernel 2.6.22-12, the last
known version without this bug.  I think you can do this via Synaptic or
Adept or via,

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.22-12-generic

(you may also need to add some further stuff with 2.6.22-12 in the
title: linux-headers-2.6.22-12, linux-headers-2.6.22-12-generic,
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-12-generic,
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-12-generic.  I'm not sure.)

Then pick 2.6.22-12 as the kernel to use when booting.
