Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules

I have a Dell Dimension E521 with a Nvidia GeForce 7300 card and a 1680 x 1050 LCD monitor.
The restricted driver I worked fine in Kubuntu Feisty, which had I installed via the Gnome restricted manager.

To be cautious, I switched the driver back to non-restricted, then after
upgrading to Gutsy I used the manager to put the updated restricted
driver back in. After reboot I was dumped into a console with no error
message. I thought this had a bullet proof xorg config?

Anyway I then used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg with the nv driver and
this worked fine. If I try to put the restricted driver back in, it
locks the x server solid. Only Ctrl+Alt+Print Screen+r will do
anything. I have checked I have all the restricted driver installs and
nvidia-glx-new and everything seems installed ok.

I have tried deleting the hidden file /lib/linux-restricted-
modules/.nvidia_new_installed I rread about somewhere but this had no
effect. Also I have tried installing nvidia-glx, which then uninstalled
nvidia-glx-new. However when I selected the restricted driver, it worked
for a few seconds and locked. After a reboot, the system had put nvidia-
glx-new back in again, and the xorg config failed again, so back to the
console :-(

I have restored the nv configuration again, but I have no idea how to
get the nvidia driver (and hence open GL) working again as this seems to
have a bug or misconfiguration of come kind caused by the Gutsy upgrade.

If you need any data, please let me know.

Regards

John Cottier.
