After a

$ sudo apt-get --reinstall install libc6-i686 
$ sudo touch /etc/ld.so.nohwcap 

the system still freezes after reboot.

The system with the running 2.6.15-23 kernel uses
/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

$ ldd /bin/bash
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0xb7f70000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0xb7f6d000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0xb7e3e000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7fbf00
